📜 Origin & History

Aqua green, called mizuiro in Japanese, became popular in Edo-period Japan after sumptuary laws restricted commoners from wearing red and purple, as its clear, plain appearance was widely favored. Ukiyo-e often used it to depict streams and summer kimonos.

This color also appeared in Japanese wagashi confections. The dessert mizu shingen mochi uses agar to mimic mountain spring water in aqua green, pursuing coolness and transparency.

During the Meiji period, Western glass techniques were introduced, and aqua green glassware began production. These bubbly glasses, under summer sunlight, resembled frozen ripples.

In the 1980s bubble economy, pale aqua green was used in resort swimming pools with mosaic tiles, creating a luxurious illusion of clear tropical shallows.

Against the backdrop of global warming, aqua green has been rediscovered as a cooling resource, representing not only aesthetic coolness but also an emotional call for the protection of clean water resources.
