📜 Origin & History
Begonia is a famous traditional Chinese flower, known as the 'Immortal Among Flowers.' In the Tang Dynasty, Jia Dan's 'Flower Catalogue' rated Begonia as the 'First Among Flowers.' Its light pink petals touched with white were endowed by literati with qualities of purity and understatement.
People in the Song Dynasty adored begonias obsessively. Su Shi's famous line, 'Fearing the flowers would fall asleep as night deepened, I burned tall candles to illuminate their red makeup,' precisely compared begonias to beauties. Begonia Pink was thus established in poetry as an elegantly understated beauty.
In Ming and Qing gardens, begonias were a must-plant tree, and their flower color became an important reference for garden architecture painting. Meanwhile, the 'Begonia Red' glaze on porcelain from the same period was extremely precious, a representative color of Jun ware, worth more than gold.
During the Republic of China era, Eileen Chang used the phrase 'begonia without fragrance' as a self-metaphor, pushing the cool, aloof beauty of begonias to the extreme. Begonia Pink was thus imbued with a solitary, proud feminine quality, distinct from other charming pinks.
In contemporary design, due to its cool-toned nature, Begonia Pink is widely used in new Chinese-style spaces and minimalist traditional-style products, becoming an important color symbol for expressing Eastern literati temperament.
