📜 Origin & History
Cinnabar Green is actually a matte olive shade of chromium oxide green, developed after chemist Vauquelin discovered the pigmentary use of chromium oxide in 1809. Its lightfastness and chemical stability far surpassed contemporary green pigments.
By the mid-19th century, Cinnabar Green was industrially produced and widely applied in artists' paints and architectural coatings. Its steady olive tone was adopted for military use, becoming the camouflage color for many 19th-century European army uniforms.
Although Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters preferred more vivid synthetic greens, the matte texture of Cinnabar Green was utilized where brightness needed to be lowered. Van Gogh used Cinnabar Green to depict distant views in some of his wheat field paintings.
In the 20th century, Cinnabar Green became an industrial and military standard color due to its weather resistance. From WWI tanks to WWII military vehicles, Cinnabar Green bore the heavy history of mechanized warfare.
Today, Cinnabar Green continues its life in military-inspired fashion and outdoor equipment. Its steady, understated matte green is a classic color balancing function and style.
