📜 Origin & History
English red is a natural iron oxide red earth color, produced in Devon and Cornwall, England. The rusty reddish-brown is a common color of the English soil.
During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century, English red was used on a massive scale. Factories, workers' houses, and railway bridges were all painted with English red. The cheap, weather-resistant iron oxide paint protected the steel and brick of the industrial age.
The British postal system designated English red for postboxes and telephone kiosks. The design of the classic red telephone box was finalized in 1924, becoming the most famous visual symbol on London's streets.
In the Victorian era, English red was used on a multitude of colonial buildings. From India to the Caribbean, English red is one of the architectural marks of the empire on which the sun never set.
Modern English red remains a protected color for traditional British architecture and industrial heritage. The red telephone box and red double-decker bus are the image ambassadors for London tourism.
