Gosling Yellow

The term Gosling Yellow first appeared in Tang Dynasty poetry. Li Shangyin wrote, 'Gosling yellow is like wine, facing wine I love the new geese,' comparing the fine, soft down of newly hatched goslings to the color of early spring willow buds. This method of extracting color from observations of natural life embodies the core of Chinese literati color aesthetics.

In the Song Dynasty, Gosling Yellow became a popular color in women's fashion. Song poetry often mentions 'gosling yellow shirts' and 'gosling yellow skirts.' Li Qingzhao also wrote the line, 'Gosling yellow first dyes the tips of willow branches.' At the time, dyeing often used a light boil of amur cork wood, pursuing an effect of barely-there elegance, which aligned with the Neo-Confucian aesthetic of subtlety.

Starting in the Yuan Dynasty, Gosling Yellow expanded from women's clothing to porcelain. Jingdezhen kiln workers discovered that at specific kiln temperatures, white glaze would emit a faint tender yellow, like gosling down covering the vessel. This was called 'eggshell white glaze' or 'Gosling Yellow glaze'. This accidental kiln transformation beauty was preserved as a classic glaze color, influencing later Ming and Qing official kilns.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Gosling Yellow was incorporated into the palace color spectrum, becoming a common dress color for young princesses and newly entered imperial concubines. In 'Dream of the Red Chamber,' Shi Xiangyun often appears wearing a Gosling Yellow short jacket, which Cao Xueqin used to signify her girlish naivety. Thus, Gosling Yellow became a visual proxy for youth and innocence.

In modern life, Gosling Yellow has shed its class attributes and returned to its original natural associations. It is widely used in baby products, early spring women's wear, and dessert packaging. When people see this color, the corners of their mouths unconsciously lift; this is the gentle memory flowing within our cultural genes.
