📜 Origin & History
Living Coral is the Color of the Year for 2019, launched by color authority Pantone. It builds upon the coral base by increasing lightness and the pink tone ratio, creating a completely new color with a golden undertone, responding to the digital age's craving for human warmth.
The original intention behind this color was Pantone color experts' global observation that excessive social media use was causing digital alienation. Living Coral was conceived as an emotional anchor between the virtual and real worlds, encouraging genuine face-to-face communication.
In color science, Living Coral sits at the 16-degree mark on the hue circle, perfectly balancing the vitality of orange with the gentleness of pink. Its high visibility and warm characteristics make it exceptionally vivid on screen displays, naturally suited for visual communication in the mobile internet era.
Between 2019 and 2020, Living Coral swept through fashion weeks, consumer electronics, and social media filters. Major brands rushed to release limited-edition products in this color, making it the most commercially penetrating Color of the Year since Millennial Pink.
This color also carries an ecological metaphor. Upon its release, Pantone specifically mentioned the climate threat facing coral reefs, allowing this bright color to simultaneously embody the vitality and fragility of life, expanding the public discourse dimension of the Color of the Year.
