📜 Origin & History
The name Flesh Pink directly stems from imitating the color of human skin. Ancient Chinese painting theory mentioned 'flesh color,' referring to the pale ochre-pink tone used to express skin texture in figure painting, a required technique for meticulous court lady paintings.
In Tang Dynasty Dunhuang murals, the faces and limbs of Bodhisattvas and flying Apsaras heavily used Flesh Pink shading. Mixing white lead with cinnabar and ochre created a warm, jade-like skin texture. This coloring technique influenced religious paintings across Central Asia and Europe along the Silk Road.
Song and Yuan figure painting inherited the Tang flesh color rendering tradition but emphasized understated elegance more. Li Gonglin's line-drawing figures lacked color, but his colored figure paintings achieved a peak of perfection in handling Flesh Pink—thin in color but thick in meaning.
In Ming and Qing furniture and collectibles, the term 'flesh-colored pink' appeared, specifically referring to a lacquer and jade color between pinkish-white and light ochre. The 'baby face' variety of Hetian jade was Flesh Pink, a gem among jades, worth more than gold.
In contemporary design, Flesh Pink, being close to skin tone, has become an important member of the 'nude color system.' Widely used in fashion, beauty, and lingerie design, its natural, skin-friendly visual feel has made it a new basic color.
