📜 Origin & History
Moegi-iro (Sprout Yellow Color) is the Japanese traditional color most imbued with the spirit of spring, taking its hue from the tender, warm yellowish-green of budding trees in early spring. 'Moe' means sprouting, and 'gi' means yellow, hence the yellow-green of sprouting.
In the Heian period, Moegi was an important part of the 'kasane irome' (color layering system). Layered with safflower red and cherry blossom pink in the collars and cuffs of twelve-layered robes, Moegi whispered the message of early spring.
During the Edo period, Moegi-iro became popular among commoners. The Moegi-iro sashes of beauties in ukiyo-e, or Moegi-iro kosode robes in actor prints, were highlights of Edo townspeople's fashion.
In the Meiji era, Moegi was used in women's education. Female students' Moegi-iro hakama skirts and braided ribbons became the youthful symbol of the 'Moegi-iro maidens' of the Taisho Romantic era.
In contemporary Japan, Moegi-iro and cherry blossom pink together form the dual pinnacles of spring-limited colors. From February to April each year, from department store windows to sweet packaging, Moegi proclaims the approach of the cherry blossom season.
