Sand Yellow was cataloged by the RAL Institute as code 1002, positioned as a warm sand tone of medium lightness. The determination of this color value referenced the average color temperature of sand grains from natural beaches along the Baltic Sea coast. In the 1920s, German engineers used a spectrophotometer to measure hundreds of sand samples and then took the median value, solidifying natural randomness into an industrial standard.
The use of Sand Yellow in architecture can be traced back to ancient Egypt. Mud from the banks of the Nile, when dried, reveals a natural Sand Yellow. The ancient Egyptians mixed this mud with straw to make bricks, constructing commoners' homes and temple outer walls. Today, remnants of 3,000-year-old Sand Yellow mud-brick structures can still be seen in Luxor.
Earthen architecture in the Middle East brought Sand Yellow to its zenith. The high-rise mud-brick buildings of the ancient city of Shibam in Yemen were all rammed from local sand, presenting a uniform Sand Yellow tone under the scorching sun.
