Daffodil Yellow is named after the daffodil flower that blooms in early spring. The Mediterranean coast is the daffodil's native home. In ancient Greek myth, the beautiful youth Narcissus was transformed into a daffodil. The orange-yellow of its corona was seen by the ancient Greeks as the flame on the fingertips of the sun god Apollo. Every year at the end of January, the daffodil is the first to break through the soil and bloom, the most punctual herald of a Mediterranean spring.
Chinese daffodil culture can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Introduced from the Western Regions, the daffodil found its ideal water and soil in Zhangzhou, Fujian. When it blooms over the winter waves, the corona of its 'golden cup and silver stand' presents a bright, warm yellow. Literati called this Daffodil Yellow the 'color of the golden cup,' pairing it with the waxy yellow of wintersweet as the 'Two Yellows of the Cold Season,' representing a character that perseveres in warmth through the cold.
During the 17th-century Dutch Tulip Mania, Daffodil Yellow was also highly sought after. Jan Brueghel the Elder's still-life paintings of daffodils rendered the corona in meticulous detail, with each speck of the corona glazed in multiple transparent layers of oil paint. These works later became historical color references when the RAL Institute determined the color value for 1007.
In the Victorian language of flowers, Daffodil Yellow was imbued with the meanings of self-love and rebirth. William Wordsworth's famous poem 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' was written in April, when daffodils bloom in the Lake District. That field of golden daffodils in the poem became the most vivid color memory of British Romantic literature.
