📜 Origin & History
Zinc Yellow is a milestone in 19th-century pigment chemistry. In 1844, French chemist Louis Jacques Thénard reacted zinc oxide with chromic acid to produce Zinc Yellow pigment. This bright, cool-toned yellow had better lightfastness than traditional chrome yellow and was non-toxic. The color value of RAL 1018 is, to a large extent, the standardized calibration of this revolutionary industrial pigment.
Zinc Yellow occupied an important position on the Impressionists' palettes. Monet preferred Zinc Yellow for plein air painting because it dried slowly and had a stable hue, allowing him to apply multiple layers on the canvas without it darkening. The flickering, cool-toned yellow points of light on the water surface in his monumental 'Water Lilies' at the Musée de l'Orangerie were achieved using Zinc Yellow.
In the early 20th century, Zinc Yellow was selected by the automobile industry. The Ford Model T was initially only available in black, but when color versions were subsequently introduced, Zinc Yellow was one of the most popular options. Advertisements claimed it was 'the color that can be recognized from a mile away on the highway,' precisely targeting the safety anxieties of early car consumers.
During World War II, Zinc Yellow was used as an identification coating on military aircraft. The U.S. Army Air Forces painted Zinc Yellow identification bands on the tail fins of P-51 Mustang fighters in the Mediterranean theater. Pilots reported that over the sea and sky of the Mediterranean, Zinc Yellow was easier to identify at long distances than any other color.
