Traffic Yellow is the core color of the modern road traffic management system. At the first International Road Congress held in Paris in 1908, delegates fiercely debated the color standard for unified traffic signs. The German delegation proposed using a bright yellow tone from the RAL system. This proposal, after over twenty years of repeated testing, eventually became the international consensus.
In the 1930s, Nazi Germany was the first to apply Traffic Yellow on a large scale when constructing its Autobahn network. All signs on the Reichsautobahn used a Traffic Yellow background with black lettering. Field tests proved this color combination had the farthest reflective visibility distance under car headlights. After WWII, this color standard was retained by the victorious powers and promoted globally.
The 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals wrote Traffic Yellow into international law. Signatory countries pledged to uniformly use Traffic Yellow as the background color for warning road signs. This is possibly the most far-reaching color legislation in human history. From Tokyo to Buenos Aires, the color value variance of Traffic Yellow is controlled within a range almost indiscernible to the naked eye.
In the 1990s, reflective sheeting technology made Traffic Yellow just as conspicuous at night. 3M's development of micro-prismatic reflective sheeting increased the brightness of Traffic Yellow signs under headlights by dozens of times.
