Red Orange

RAL 2001 Red Orange is positioned in the RAL color chart system as a reddish-toned orange. The original intent behind this color number was to provide an intermediate option for industrial scenarios—softer than pure red, yet more solemn than pure orange—suitable for situations requiring warning but not excessive stimulation.

The visual character of this color is close to a mixture of natural iron oxide red and red lead, bearing similarities to the red bole pigments commonly used in Renaissance fresco bases. Bramante used a similar toned base in his Vatican frescoes, lending religious scenes a weighty, earthy feel.

In the mid-20th century, Red Orange was used by Nordic countries as exterior paint for wooden buildings. The pigment derived from the byproduct of Sweden's Falun copper mine was close to this color number; the steady Red Orange seen on aged wooden churches and farmhouses is exactly this.

In the heavy machinery sector, Red Orange was chosen as the designated color for crane booms and excavator buckets. It offers high contrast against blue skies while being more resistant to UV degradation than pure red, making it an ideal protective color for outdoor engineering equipment.

In contemporary vintage design aesthetics, RAL 2001 has been rediscovered. Industrial-style interior decoration and custom motorcycle paint jobs favor this rusty, time-worn Red Orange, which tells a story of steel, sweat, and craftsmanship.
