Traffic Orange

RAL 2009 Traffic Orange is an infrastructure-specific color named after its function. It was incorporated into the unified European traffic sign standard in the mid-20th century, specifically designated as the base color for temporary barriers, construction fences, and road signs, forming a core vocabulary of European road safety visual language.

The design of this color number underwent extensive visual ergonomics testing. Researchers compared the recognition speed and misreading rate of dozens of orange tones in simulated driving environments, ultimately selecting this deeper orange with a reddish tint—it maintains optimal recognition performance in backlit, rainy, foggy, and nighttime reflective conditions.

The International Union of Railways adopted it as the specified color for track maintenance vehicles, and airport ground handling guidance vehicles and fire trucks widely use this color number, making it a universal color language in global transportation infrastructure.

In sporting events, Traffic Orange is used for the temporary guidance system of marathon routes. As city marathons traverse complex road networks spanning dozens of kilometers, Traffic Orange arrows and ribbons remain clear in runners' peripheral vision, guiding every step.

Entering the era of intelligent transportation, Traffic Orange continues its mission in next-generation electronic road signs and in-vehicle HUD displays. Its color gamut is precisely mapped to the color gamuts of LED and OLED screens, ensuring a seamless transition from the physical to the digital world.
