📜 Origin & History
RAL 5014 Pigeon Blue mimics the pinkish-grey-blue iridescence on the neck feathers of city square pigeons. When developing this color, RAL observed that postwar Europeans desperately yearned for peace—the pigeon as peace symbol gave its feather colors a mission of trauma healing.
In the 1960s, European modernist public buildings extensively used pigeon blue for metal window frames and facade louvers. It transitioned seamlessly with concrete grey while offering more warmth and optical softness than raw aluminum.
During the heyday of Deutsche Bundespost, pigeon blue was the standard color for postal trucks and mailbox bases. Extremely stain-resistant, non-heat-absorbing in rain, while discreetly evoking the postal spirit of 'like carrier pigeons—mission accomplished.'
In the digital office era, pigeon blue is an excellent interface blue. Soft and non-harsh, it maintains elegance even on inconsistently color-managed office monitors—making it the default, low-stress theme color for office software and digital journals.
