Scarlet red in ancient times referred to a light or fresh red. The character 'Fei' relates to silk, originally meaning red silk fabric. In Tang Dynasty official uniforms, scarlet was prestigious; officials of the fourth and fifth ranks wore scarlet robes, representing the honor of mid-to-high ranking officials.
Han Yu's poetry praised spring scenery, and another of his poems described young men drinking with scarlet clothes appearing vividly. It's clear scarlet was a symbol of youth and career success.
