📜 Origin & History
Aster Color is taken from the aster flowers that bloom profusely in autumn. This slightly faded, decayed tone is synonymous with 'autumnal desolation' in Japanese literature. In the 'Kokin Wakashū', the aster is one of the seven autumn grasses, symbolizing longing, unambitious detachment, and impermanence.
Heian period women changing into autumn attire considered Aster Color an indispensable 'autumn layering'. This indifferent, pale purple blended perfectly with the red of autumn leaves and the yellow of pampas grass, reflecting Japanese aesthetics' high esteem for the realms of decline and withered simplicity.
In the Edo period, haiku master Matsuo Bashō often included asters in his travel poems. Rimpa school painter Ogata Kōrin also loved using Aster Color to depict scenes of desolate autumn wind. The combination of purple and silver paint conveyed a profound, mysterious, otherworldly Zen quality.
In modern eyes, Aster Color has shed its pessimistic melancholy, transforming into a high-end, cool indifference. It belongs to the Morandi color palette, possessing an elegant sense of detachment, an excellent choice for the attire and dwellings of intellectuals.
