Vivid Warm Yellow

The natural prototype for warm yellow is the midday sun. Humanity's first sensation of yellow was not an abstract color, but the temperature of sunlight on the skin. As Australian Aboriginals walked through the desert, the sun overhead presented a saturated, almost thickened gold. This color is imprinted into humanity's most primal, physical memory of heat.

In ancient China, warm yellow was associated with the central cardinal direction. In the Five Elements system, yellow corresponds to the Earth element, positioned in the center, and is the supreme color governing the four directions. The 'Rites of Zhou' stipulated that when the Son of Heaven offered sacrifices to Heaven, he wore a great fur robe and a crown; the yellow silk lining had to match the exact hue of the midday sun. Any deviation towards cool or warm was seen as disrespectful.

The court paintings of India's Mughal Empire heavily used warm yellow. Miniature painters used a pigment called 'Indian Yellow,' said to be extracted from the urine of cows fed only on mango leaves, producing a rich, translucent warm yellow. Under the harsh sun of Rajasthan, the warm yellow of the women's saris in the paintings merges seamlessly with the scorched yellow desert background.

At the end of the 19th century, Van Gogh left the Netherlands for the South of France and was overwhelmed by the sun in Arles. He wrote to his brother Theo, 'The sun here is a swirling vortex, baking the wheat fields into a thick, viscous warm yellow.' He used tubes of chrome yellow to pile impasto layers onto the canvas, covering it with pigment like mud.

In the 20th century, the fast-food industry discovered warm yellow's power to stimulate appetite. McDonald's Golden Arches use a precisely calculated shade of warm yellow. Psychologists found that this specific hue reminds people of freshly cooked French fries, causing salivation three seconds faster than when viewing cool tones.
